One of the main features of this area is the azure expanse of the sea. For centuries, the sea has been a source of food, a trading hub, and a significant economic resource throughout history, leading the people of Pelješac to stand out as skilled mariners of global renown.

Their travel-filled lives are attested by the captain's houses – distinct architectural units where traditional construction blends with innovations brought by sailors from their "voyages." In addition to the wealth of seafood catch, Pelješac is also renowned for fish farming in ponds and hatcheries. Alongside traditional fishing, fish farming is becoming increasingly important for preserving fish populations and the sustainability of the fishing industry.

However, Pelješac is also renowned as a fishing paradise. The first open-sea tuna fishing in Europe took place in these waters, and besides tuna, sardines and sea bream were also caught. The sea around Pelješac has also influenced the local gastronomy, filled with the aromas of fish prepared "na gradele" (grilled), "na lešo" (boiled), or "na brudet" (stewed), seasoned with homemade spices.

Furthermore, fish farms contribute to fresh and high-quality catches, enabling fish to remain a primary ingredient in authentic Pelješac dishes, thus preserving and nurturing the rich fishing tradition of this region.
