STON WALLS: THE LARGEST WALLS IN EUROPE AND THE GREATEST ARCHITECTURAL ACHIEVEMENT OF THAT TIME
They often refer to the Ston walls as the second longest in the world after the Great Wall of China, although whether this fact is accurate or not, they are certainly among the best-preserved medieval defensive structures. In the first half of the 14th century, the walls were constructed by the Republic of Dubrovnik after it annexed the Pelješac Peninsula. The purpose was to protect the salt pans and shellfish farms in the Mali Ston Bay from enemies, and during that time, the Dubrovnik residents embarked on one of the most significant urban endeavours in Europe!
